Breastfeeding and Covid-19

It’s pretty scary to think about how this virus will act and how it will affect the breastfeeding relationship.  There is so much we don’t know and that can make it scary.

Generally, breastmilk will develop antibodies to give to the baby to help them stay healthy. At this time there is no evidence to support interrupting the breastfeeding relationship if baby or parent becomes ill with Coronavirus. Reducing trips in public beyond exercise (while maintaining social distance), making sure the entire family washes hands frequently, and use of a mask if symptoms occur will reduce risk of transmission.  At no point is it recommended to stop breastfeeding as long as the parent is able to breastfeed.

We’ll get through this scary time and I’m always here to provide support.
